I know, I know. No one should look to the Huffington Post to understand a Vatican document. Nonetheless, the headline this morning captures the change the document released by Cardinal Erdo represents: "Earthquake Vatican Document: Accept Gays." Again, I would point readers to the groundbreaking USCCB text "Always Our Children," which was the first Church document about gays that emphasized no teaching of the Church on human sexuality should be allowed to trump our core Catholic teaching on the dignity of each and every human being. Then, it seemed like the conference took two steps - maybe a dozen steps - back from their own document in the past decade or so as the shape of the conference changed. In any event, the times they are a changin' and it feels great.
