Paprocki to seek exorcism for 'sin of same-sex marriage'

At the same time Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn signs the state's new same-sex marriage law next week, Bishop Thomas Paprocki of Springfield will be offering prayers for "exorcism in reparation for the sin of same-sex marriage."

The Illinois Legislature passed a bill Nov. 5 allowing same-sex couples to wed, becoming the 15th state to allow such unions. Quinn is scheduled to sign the bill Nov. 20.

Paprocki told the Chicago Tribune Thursday, "It is scandalous that so many Catholic politicians are responsible for enabling the passage of this legislation and even twisting the words of the pope to rationalize their actions despite the clear teaching of the church."

He added, "All politicians now have the moral obligation to work for the repeal of this sinful and objectionable legislation."

The bishop said his prayers will be offered in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Springfield, the Illinois capital.
